There are many places in Greece where athletic contests are held. The Isthmus of Corinth is the area where the Isthmus Games were held. These games were held every 2 years. In Delphi, the Pythian Games are held every 4 years.
In the South-West of Greece, Olympia, the Olympics were started around 700 BC. The Olympics are every 4 years in honor of Zeus. Only Greek Nationals could compete in the Olympics. Women were not allowed to watch the games because they weren’t allowed to go in public. The statue of Zeus at Olympia is made of gold and ivory. Pheidias, a Greek sculptor, crafted the 42 feet high statue of Zeus.

The Olympics use to be 1 day long, but in 472 BC they changed the length to 5 days. The first day was dedicated mainly to sacrifices, while the actual events were scattered throughout the other 4 days. On the middle day, 100 oxen were sacrificed to the gods. There were many events including foot-races, boxing, wrestling, pancratium, horse-racing, and chariot races. Sprinting, long-jump, javelin, and discus were also events in the games.
